Beyond Logic: The Intersection of AI and Human Decision-Making

In my previous post from March 2018, I discussed the impact of technology on information management and the role of managers in this new age of data. Today, I want to revisit that topic and examine how far we have come since then and what the future holds for us.

At the time, I mentioned the increasing use of technology in information management and the need for more sophisticated systems as organizations grow in size and complexity. But even then, we were only scratching the surface of what was possible. Little did I know in 2018, that I was almost predicting the emergence of a world fascinated by AI! Fast forward to 2023, and we have witnessed an explosion in the development and adoption of artificial intelligence and large language learning models (LLLM) like ChatGPT, which are transforming the way we interact with information.

One major development since 2018 has been the advancement of natural language processing (NLP) and its integration with AI. With NLP, machines are able to understand human language, not just in terms of syntax and grammar, but also in terms of context and meaning. This has paved the way for the creation of large language models like ChatGPT, which can generate coherent and meaningful text based on input from humans. The impact of this development cannot be overstated.

We are already seeing examples of how ChatGPT and other large language models are being used in various fields, from healthcare to finance to education. In healthcare, for instance, researchers are using ChatGPT to generate summaries of patient records, which can save doctors valuable time and improve patient outcomes. In finance, large language models are being used to analyze financial data and generate insights for investors. In education, teachers are using ChatGPT to create personalized lesson plans for students based on their individual needs and learning styles. Some are even going as far as creating their PhD thesis using ChatGPT!

But as with any new technology, there are also concerns about the impact of large language models on our society. One concern is that these models could be used to spread disinformation and propaganda or to create convincing fake news stories. Another concern is that large language models could exacerbate existing biases and inequalities in our society if they are trained on data that reflects these biases. Many also worry about this technology’s potential use in international conflicts, where certain types of state-sponsored cyber attacks leveraging AI technologies can cripple countries with massive populations.

As we look ahead to the next five years, it is clear that the impact of large language models and AI will only continue to grow. But what will this mean for us as humans? Some argue that AI and large language models will ultimately replace human workers in many fields, leading to mass unemployment and social upheaval. Others argue that these technologies will enable us to work more efficiently and effectively, freeing up our time for more creative pursuits and higher-level thinking.

Ultimately, the impact of large language models and AI on our world will depend on how we choose to use them. As with any tool, they can be used for good or for ill. It is up to us to ensure that we use these technologies in a way that benefits all of humanity, not just a select few.

As we stand at the cusp of unprecedented change, we can’t help but marvel at the pace of technological development and what it means for the future. From information management systems to large language learning models, we’re witnessing an incredible transformation in how we interact with machines and how machines interact with us.

It’s clear that technology has the potential to revolutionize our lives, but it’s important to remember that technology is simply a tool. As we continue to develop increasingly advanced systems, we need to remain mindful of our values, our humanity, and our responsibility to each other and to the world.

As we move forward, we must ask ourselves:

What kind of a world do we want to create with these tools?
How can we ensure that these technologies are used ethically and responsibly?
How can we use these tools to build a better future for all of us, not just a select few?

The answers to these questions are not easy, but they are critical to ensuring that we use technology to create a world that is equitable, just, and sustainable. As we continue to develop and refine these systems, we must remain committed to our shared humanity and work to create a world that is worthy of our greatest aspirations. Only then, we can claim that we are indeed the smartest among… I would say all species, but now I must include AI entities as well!
